Patara Beach & Ancient City: 18km of Sand Dunes and 2,000 Years of History
Patara is a place that goes far beyond a typical holiday destination: it is one of the rare spots on Earth where nature and history offer their most extraordinary gifts simultaneously. Eighteen kilometres of unbroken sandy beach, an ancient Lycian city rising just behind the shore, and sea turtle nesting grounds β Patara is without question one of the most unique experiences on the Aegean and Mediterranean coastline.
The Beach: Turkey's Longest Stretch of Sand
Patara Beach officially holds the title of Turkey's longest beach: 18km of untouched sand, closed to all vehicle traffic. Its distance from the major tourist resorts keeps it remarkably peaceful compared to more famous destinations.
Beach Highlights:
- Fine, golden-white sand of exceptional quality
- Natural sea breeze provides cooling, though waves can be strong β confident swimming recommended
- Sun lounger and refreshment kiosk at the entrance area
- Golden morning light makes for spectacular photography
Caretta Caretta: Sea Turtle Nesting Ground
Patara Beach is one of the most important Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtle) nesting sites in the Mediterranean. Between June and September, female turtles come ashore at night to dig nests and lay their eggs. For this reason, the beach is closed to visitors between 20:00 and 08:00.
If you visit in July or August, you can join guided turtle-watching tours with experienced wardens.
The Ancient City: Birthplace of St. Nicholas
Patara was one of the ancient world's most important harbour cities. Founded in the 4th century BC, its ruins continue to astonish visitors today:
Must-See Sites:
- The Great Theatre β A Roman-era theatre seating 6,000
- Lycian Assembly Building β Parliament of ancient Lycia (one of the cradles of democracy)
- Triumphal Arch β A magnificent gateway dating from AD 100
- Bath Complex β Three-phase Roman baths
Patara is also widely accepted as the birthplace of St. Nicholas β the historical figure behind the legend of Father Christmas β giving the city a spiritual significance recognised around the world.
