Kaputas Beach: Turkey's Most Breathtaking Hidden Cove
Where a narrow mountain gorge meets the Aegean Sea β Kaputas is the kind of beach that stops you in your tracks. Just 30 minutes from Delphin Villas.
Kaputas Beach: Turkey's Most Breathtaking Hidden Cove
There is a moment when you first look down from the roadside railing at Kaputas that stays with you. The gorge drops away below, framing a strip of golden sand and water of a colour that seems impossible β a deep, luminous turquoise that shifts to aquamarine at the shore's edge. It is one of the most arresting views on the entire Turkish coast.
Getting There
Kaputas is located on the D400 coastal road between Kalkan and Kas, approximately 30 minutes by car from your villa (19km). The beach is accessed via a steep concrete staircase of around 187 steps cut into the cliff face β challenging on the way down with heavy bags, but entirely manageable for anyone in reasonable fitness.
Alternatively, the beach can be reached by sea on one of the daily boat trips departing from Kalkan harbour.
The Beach
The beach itself is compact β perhaps 150 metres of fine golden-white sand backed by towering limestone cliffs. A small stream emerges from the gorge, keeping the water temperature noticeably cool even in the height of summer. This, combined with the natural shade from the cliffs in the morning and late afternoon, makes it a more comfortable beach than many of its neighbours.
Water depth: The sea shelves steeply. Within a few metres you are already swimming. This makes it unsuitable for very young children but perfect for confident swimmers.
Facilities: Basic sun lounger hire, a small kiosk selling drinks and snacks. No showers. Bring water.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning (before 10am): The cliffs cast the beach in deep shade, the water is crystalline, and you may well have the place entirely to yourself. This is when Kaputas is at its most magical.
Late afternoon (after 5pm): The crowds thin considerably. The light turns golden and the reflections in the water are spectacular.
Avoid: July and August midday, when the beach can become packed and the descent and ascent in direct sun is tiring.
Photography
Kaputas is one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey, and for good reason. The best shots are taken:
- From the road above, looking straight down into the gorge
- From the water, looking back up at the cliffs and staircase
- In the early morning light, when the colour of the water is at its richest
Nearby Attractions
Kas: 20 minutes east of Kaputas, this small harbour town is worth a full afternoon. Browse the boutiques, visit the Lycian sarcophagi scattered through the town, and eat at one of the excellent rooftop restaurants.
Ucagiz and Kekova: 45 minutes east, the sunken ruins of the ancient city of Simena lie beneath the water of Kekova Bay. A boat trip here is one of the region's most memorable experiences.
Practical Tips
- Park on the road above β there is a small layby. Arrive early or expect to queue in summer.
- The steps are uneven and steep. Wear appropriate footwear for the descent.
- There is no flat walking area on the beach β bring folding shoes or be prepared to walk on sand and pebbles.
- The kiosk is expensive. Bring your own drinks and snacks.
